Workpackages
The overall strategy of the GAP1 work plan is to provide the opportunities for stakeholders and scientists to engage in the planning and preparation of cooperative researc case studies, that will form the foundations of a European-wide RT project on linking fishermen’s and scientific knowledge.
The opportunities for engagement are
operationalised in three ways
(i) through regional workshops administered by the local
scientific institute, (ii) throug two European-wide workshops planned and administered by
the co-ordinator and WP leaders
(iii) through effective communication and dissemination
actions. Jointly, the outcomes of these cooperative activities enable the objectives and
define the products of GAP1 (see Figure 1.2). Implementation of the overall strategy is
facilitated throug five work packages:
WP 1 - Bridges and best-practice, will start to build relationships and trust between
stakeholders and scientists throug sharing experiences of engaging effectively in
science-industry projects that deliver meaningful results. T is will be ac ieved during the
first European workshop. The format of the workshop will be an active participation event,
not a series of presentations to a non-participating audience.
WP 2 - Knowledge and perspectives, will engage scientists and stake olders in a series of
regional workshops, during which they will share their knowledge and ideas in the process
of developing specific researchcase studies of common interest. Tentative ideas for these have been discussed already (see Table 2.1, page 29). To ensure that the overall project
maintains a big picture approach , the sociological context of the GAP1 activities on
developing cooperative research will be investigated through the involvement of WP3
social scientists in selected case-studies.
WP 3 - Planning & embedding, will build on t e regional activities of WP 2
throug a
second European-wide workshop. The workshop will serve to engage all participants at a
higher level by bringing the European view on research and setting the sociological
context of participatory research . The workshop will use the information and experience
gained, to outline plans for researchactivities that bridge the gap between science and
society by bringing stake olders knowledge to bear on the scientific advice underpinning
management and policy-making.
WP 4 - Effective outreach, will be fundamental in gaining continued support and
commitment to the overall GAP programme. This will be achieved through communication
of the concepts and progress of GAP1 and plans for future RT activities, to project
participants, the wider scientific and stake holder community, management agencies,
European and national science administrators, and the public. It will also play a key role in
ensuring that the principles of openness, quality and credibility of science are adequately
addressed.
WP 5 – Project co-ordination and financial management, Cefas will undertake consortium
and financial management activities. The steering group will implement strategic planning
and monitoring of milestones required to evaluate progress of work package activities and
manage the preparation of an RT activity.
